Constantly find yourself trying to catch up with the latest trends or breaking news in social media? There never seems to be enough hours in a day. Well, we’re here to help! Join us for #TrendingTuesdays here on the blog for the scoop on the biggest breakthroughs, viral trends and general happenings within the social sphere!
This, our first installment of #TrendingTuesday happens to fall on the eve of a very exciting announcement from Facebook- stories and lenses are here! Rolling out today to over 1.15 billion users, the features have a glaring resemblance to… yes, you guessed it, #Snapchat!
“Photos and videos help us share the things words can’t quite express. Today we launched new tools to make it easier to share what you want with who you want. Starting this week when you open Facebook, you'll see a new in-app camera loaded with masks, filters and interactive effects, and two new ways to share: Facebook Stories and Direct. Let the camera do the talking…” - Sheryl Sandberg, COO at Facebook.
So now that three of the largest social media networks share at least one large and uncanny resemblance to one another, where will users flock to more? When Instagram launched their stories feature, many worried that it would soon mean the end of #Snapchat, but with enough differences (lack of lense options to name one), users quickly realized it would be anything but. Many users took the opportunity to speak to the two channels’ very different audiences, especially bloggers and influencers who tend to have different aesthetics and followers on Instagram and Snapchat.
We’ll be anxiously awaiting more news on how the introduction of Facebook stories shapes the future of Instagram stories and of course Snapchat. Our thoughts? We’re excited to give the new features a go and see how the features compare!
Some initial takeaways:
If you’re on Facebook more than Instagram or Snapchat, you’re going to love this new addition. Heavier on Insta or Snapchat? We’ll be interested to see if this get you over to Facebook more (the obvious goal).
We can’t wait to see all the reactions!
